Space And Materiality

6th August 2018

WEEK2

So, today were supposed to bring our assignments given in the previous lecture.

I basically collected all the materials from my home itself. Here is what all I collected;

04AE3C0B-F606-4B85-94C3-2BEEFC2D367C

I brought these materials that I collected at my home. I got straw, copper wire, wool, bobby pin, toothpick, rubber band that is Linear. Mount board, card board, cotton cloth, balloon that is Planar and beads that is Granular.

Some of my classmates got materials never seen before. Everyone of us had done the assignment. Sir asked us to present ourselves with materials and which material came under which of the category ie; Linear, Planar, Granular.

We were supposed to bring MDF sheet today. We were finally going to work with the machines. So, after the presentations wee over we sir told us to design coasters. Sir explained us how to start to think about how to design a coaster.

Sir asked us to create as many designs as possible and then to work on any two of the designs we thought that were the best. Then we all started to think how we wanted our coasters to be. I was confused and made many designs but was still not sure which ones to work with.

After the designs were made it was time for us to explore a the world of machines to turn our designs into reality. As soon as we reached the workshop/lab we saw that the machines were already occupied by the other class and we had to wait for our turn to use them. Till then one of the sirs in the lab cut our big MDF sheets into smaller sections and each of us took two of them. Then we started smoothening the sides of the blocks       as it was the only machine where a lot of us could work at the same time. And then we  made the designs with pencil on the block. I had to wait a lot to use any machine. Everyone was preoccupied with all the machines but I finally got a drilling machine and drilled some holes into my coaster(I still wasn’t sure of how I wanted my coaster to look like).

Then it was time to close the lab so we all had to leave the lab. I wasn’t finished with any of the coasters and wanted to make sure that they were completed by next week as we had to submit these coasters in the next lecture.

Design Drawing

3rd August 2018

WEEK1

Drawing is putting a line around and idea”

But Anando sir says “You need to learn to doodle before you understand how to draw“.

First sir asked us to draw whatever we like in the sketch book, and all of us drew what we were best at doing. After that sir explained that we need to do sketches that we don’t know or that we haven’t tried before. That will make us skilled and improve our sketches. Then he wanted us to paint with ink on the paper. He asked us to randomly paint anything we want without giving it a defined line or a border .Just to draw a rough sketch.

So we took out our paint brushes and started painting with the ink like crazy on the paper. Well, I spill the ink two times in the entire lecture just as a kid would do and exactly how sir wanted us to be;) .Sir asked us to make sketches that was just as rough as the sketches/drawings we used to make as a kid behind the maths notebook when lecture got boring!!

He just wanted us to be as immature as a we were when we first started drawing.

So after lot of thinking and ink wasting we finally got something as good as sir wanted us to do. Rough sketches/doodles was all sir was looking for.

The day ended with lot of ink here and there and even more sheets with ink on it with all the possible creativity that could have been done in our classroom.

For the next weeks lecture sir wanted us to go outside and do some live sketching keeping everything he said about how he wanted us to do “doodles” and not lines .And we could bring as many sketches as possible.

And we all left the classroom thinking about where we could go for our live sketching.

Space And Materiality

30th July 2018

WEEK1

So, it was the first day of my college(“officially”).I was pretty pumped up for the day to begin with our very first lecture with Shamit Sir. We all introduced ourselves and got to know more about our classmates.

Topic for the day was materials. So Sir introduced us to 3 different type of materials categorised into:”LINEAR, PLANAR and GRANULAR. He asked us about some of the things that we could think of that would come under any of the above categories. So a lot of guys came with a lot of different answers .For eg: Planar materials(glass, steel, cardboard, etc), Liner materials(copper wire, steel rod, wood sticks, etc), Granular materials( beads, sand, salt, clay, etc).

So, after knowing about all the materials and in what form it was used it was time for us to visit our workshop/lab!

The workshop is actually where we were supposed to work with all these materials. So, first we were introduced to the faculty and all the machines. I had never seen such machines before except some of the regular used tools and was excited to use them. We were also informed about the rules before entering the lab. We got to know a lot about which tools and which machines were used for what type of work.

We were going to use all these machines real soon!!!

Then we were given our very first assignment and were asked to bring it to the next class. We were supposed to stick 10 materials according the the categories mentioned above.

So thats how the day ended with all the curiosity of whether i will be able to use these machines and make something really productive out of it, and also to complete our ASSIGNMENT!

Strategy Through Gaming[Electives]

1st August 2018

WEEK1

The day started with lot of expectations. We were supposed to know what was going to happen in our electives or to what was electives that we had chosen as it was our first day to the elective.

Well my second elective was “STRATEGY THROUGH GAMING”,as name suggests it was supposed to be something related to games. Manthan Gala sir was going to take our elective. When I entered the room the first thing my eyes caught were the stack of board games on the table and of course playing them!!!

He first showed us video and asked us what we felt about it. The conclusion to it was, strategies are used and where we need to focus while we play a game.

Then he introduced us to another sir who was going to explain about what we were going to do. We were divided into teams of 10 to 12 people and were given different board games. So, we were given the game “WORD ON THE STREET”, I had never heard of this game before and thought that it was going to get boring because of the word “WORD “on the box of the game.

So we were again divided onto two groups and were told to select a captain each. The game was simple yet full of chaos. So there were 5 columns of 14 boxes each and in the middle column, there were different alphabets arranged according to the order given on the board and we were given letter coins which we had to arrange on the column according to the letter on the board ,and there was a set of cards kept in between the teams. Each team was supposed to pick one card at a time and was supposed to say a word closest to that question. For eg; something which is cylindrical, the answer could be pipe, bottle, etc. So when the answer is told by the team they were supposed to take the letter coin and shift it to the column adjacent to the existing column(towards themselves)and so does happen with the other team. The game moves on just like tug of war.

We had a lot of arguments on what the answer said was wrong or we don’t agree with the other team sometimes but at the end of the day we had a lot of fun. Sir was the time keeper and each team got 30 secs. The team to get most of the letters on their side WON!

After a long round for about an hour the other team won, but we had a lot of fun and shouting and arguments. I din’t want it to end honestly ,no one wanted ,it seemed like our group had lot of fun than the other one playing another board game.

Sir asked us what we learnt while playing the game, what could have improved to play that game better. Like;

*To keep the track of time

*To think about the correct word to get the maximum letters

*To think under pressure

*To have a good vocabulary etc.

The main reason for playing these games is to understand how these games are related with our day to day life and how playing these games or understanding the strategies can make us a better player and how this helps in our real life and how to deal with it in a better way.

I enjoyed it a lot and I am looking forward for the next week to play another GAME!
