WEEK4

So today we learnt all about “Abstract”. It is something that is not direct. It exists as an idea or something we want to show indirectly. It applies to art to represent a concept or object but may not look like them.

So to begin, Sir asked us to first make abstract forms of cube and sphere. I tried to make many of them, but making it abstract was a bit difficult.

So while making these abstracts forms there were some things that we had to keep in mind. They were:

  • Explode
  • Combine
  • Disintegrate
  • Melt
  • Crack
  • Wrapped/Covered
  • Morph
  • Dissolve
  • Break, etc.

Some of the sketches of the cube and sphere that I made are:

So after we were done with this it was time to actually work on something. So, in the last class we had made the hand grips and the same grips we had to convert into abstract form! I was really confused at the beginning but Sir then explained us how we were supposed to do it. For Eg; if I had made grip of the had holding a cup I had to somehow make the hand in such a way that I looked like it was holding a cup and also be a cup. We were not supposed to objectify anything and also not use the object in literal sense.

So these are the ones that I tried making of:

We had to make and bring 10 of them in the next class!

WEEK3

So today we were supposed to bring the coasters that we had to make throughout the week. But some of us were unable to complete the coasters and so sir gave one more week to complete our coasters.

And then we moved forward to todays  topic that was “HAPTICS”.                                           It is about any form of interaction involving touch, texture, impressions, pressure.

After that we discussed about the types of Grips;

  • Hold
  • Comfort
  • Action-Reaction
  • Balance
  • Pressure
  • Surface type, etc.

Then sir asked us about some of the Actions that we do with our hands like;

  • Catching
  • Pulling
  • Pushing
  • Holding
  • Carrying
  • Throwing
  • Catching
  • Hitting
  • Writing, etc.                                                                                                                               And sir asked us to write down a list to these actions and grips as much as we can think of. Here is what I thought of:

After this we got to know about “Degree Of Freedom” ie; the number of motions an object can do.

We then had to draw those action in our sketch books, it was really easy to say all the actions done by hands but was equally difficult to draw them.                                             We had to make 5 of them in the beginning but then sir gave us an hour long break and go around the campus and observe new actions, and write down another list of things that we think of that was not added in the list above. Here is the list:

Then we came back and had to make more 10 of them different from the ones we made above. So today we observed a lot to get different grips and more importantly drawing them!

WEEK2

So, today were supposed to bring our assignments given in the previous lecture.

I basically collected all the materials from my home itself. Here is what all I collected;

04AE3C0B-F606-4B85-94C3-2BEEFC2D367C

I brought these materials that I collected at my home. I got straw, copper wire, wool, bobby pin, toothpick, rubber band that is Linear. Mount board, card board, cotton cloth, balloon that is Planar and beads that is Granular.

Some of my classmates got materials never seen before. Everyone of us had done the assignment. Sir asked us to present ourselves with materials and which material came under which of the category ie; Linear, Planar, Granular.

We were supposed to bring MDF sheet today. We were finally going to work with the machines. So, after the presentations wee over we sir told us to design coasters. Sir explained us how to start to think about how to design a coaster.

Sir asked us to create as many designs as possible and then to work on any two of the designs we thought that were the best. Then we all started to think how we wanted our coasters to be. I was confused and made many designs but was still not sure which ones to work with.

After the designs were made it was time for us to explore a the world of machines to turn our designs into reality. As soon as we reached the workshop/lab we saw that the machines were already occupied by the other class and we had to wait for our turn to use them. Till then one of the sirs in the lab cut our big MDF sheets into smaller sections and each of us took two of them. Then we started smoothening the sides of the blocks       as it was the only machine where a lot of us could work at the same time. And then we  made the designs with pencil on the block. I had to wait a lot to use any machine. Everyone was preoccupied with all the machines but I finally got a drilling machine and drilled some holes into my coaster(I still wasn’t sure of how I wanted my coaster to look like).

Then it was time to close the lab so we all had to leave the lab. I wasn’t finished with any of the coasters and wanted to make sure that they were completed by next week as we had to submit these coasters in the next lecture.

WEEK1

So, it was the first day of my college(“officially”).I was pretty pumped up for the day to begin with our very first lecture with Shamit Sir. We all introduced ourselves and got to know more about our classmates.

Topic for the day was materials. So Sir introduced us to 3 different type of materials categorised into:”LINEAR, PLANAR and GRANULAR. He asked us about some of the things that we could think of that would come under any of the above categories. So a lot of guys came with a lot of different answers .For eg: Planar materials(glass, steel, cardboard, etc), Liner materials(copper wire, steel rod, wood sticks, etc), Granular materials( beads, sand, salt, clay, etc).

So, after knowing about all the materials and in what form it was used it was time for us to visit our workshop/lab!

The workshop is actually where we were supposed to work with all these materials. So, first we were introduced to the faculty and all the machines. I had never seen such machines before except some of the regular used tools and was excited to use them. We were also informed about the rules before entering the lab. We got to know a lot about which tools and which machines were used for what type of work.

We were going to use all these machines real soon!!!

Then we were given our very first assignment and were asked to bring it to the next class.We were supposed to stick 10 materials according the the categories mentioned above.

So thats how the day ended with all the curiosity of whether i will be able to use these machines and make something really productive out of it, and also to complete our ASSIGNMENT!
